Nuclear Power Plants

Nuclear Power Plants

Introduction

  • What is nuclear energy and what is it used for?
  • How is nuclear energy generated?
  • What are some of the things NPP regulations monitor?

Methodology & Technology

  • What are the functions of a Seismic Monitoring System (SMS) for NPP?
  • What benefits does an SMS offer?

Our Solutions

  • SMS & SAS systems for centralised or decentralised recording
  • A wide variety of high quality sensors to measure acceleration, velocity and environmental phenomena.
  • Advanced and reliable software solutions with highly customisable options
Nuclear fission is a process used to create nuclear energy by splitting uranium atoms. The resulting heat from the process creates steam that is used to turn steam turbines, which are connected to electric generators that will then generate electricity. Globally, we use more than 25,000 terawatt-hours of electricity a year (net consumption).

The Nuclear Power industry has very strict regulations to monitor and safeguard operational safety, as well as safeguarding against natural hazards, human error, mechanical failure, and design flaws. According to regional, national and international safety standards, Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) need to be able to mitigate potential effects of an earthquake as part of integrated risk management.

Such mitigation can be achieved by utilising specific instrumentation for monitoring the earthquake ground motions and the response of the plant features to these motions.

Methodology & Technology
  • What are the functions of an SMS for NPP?
The type of instrumentation used to monitor earthquake ground motions and NPP response for mitigation purposes is called a Seismic Monitoring System (SMS). The main functions of the SMS are to:
  • detect any (significant) earthquake at plant location
  • provide data records of acceleration at defined locations
  • perform OBE/SSE exceedance evaluation
  • provide a report to the plant operator after an event
  • execute periodical self test

  • What does an SMS offer?
GeoSIG delivers complete SMS solutions for NPP applications. These systems:
  • comply fully or exceed regional, national and international nuclear regulatory requirements
  • come with comprehensive certification and documentation, which can as well be supplied from scratch for any particular requirement
  • include a powerful industrial computer for complex data processing based on different algorithms including response spectra analysis
  • perform automatic analysis and evaluation of the earthquake impact on monitored structures
  • provide comprehensive and fast notification and reporting features
  • warrant the robustness, reliability and functionality to serve its main purpose
  • include self diagnostic and testing features to assure continuous system-readiness to act once in a life
  • present simplicity of operation, maintenance and upgrade
  • incorporate redundancy as key safety features
  • offer automatic-shutdown options
Selected NPPs Instrumented with GeoSIG Instruments
In the past decades, GeoSIG Instruments have been delivered to more than 70 NPPs in more than 15 countries worldwide. Some of the NPP's around the world, which are instrumented with GeoSIG Instruments, are listed below.
